Teatr Pantomimy Mimo (Poland)

Mimo Theatre was established in 2002 by Bartłomiej Ostapczuk as a one-man theatre, but it was soon transformed into a company. The group’s artistic experiments resulted in creating their unique dramatic language, in which the artists are trying to combine the elements of art introduced by the key creators and reformers of modern mime. In their work Mimo Theatre is trying to express the essence of feelings and emotions, and they do not shun absurd. They observe the rules of mime, but they accept no limits – their only limits are the limits of their imagination.

Since 2002 the company has produced 11 performances, mainly stage spectacles. Since 2010 the theatre has been creating open-air performances – they believe that mime can also exist in spaces other than the theatre. The company has performed in Poland and abroad. The artists cooperate all year round with the Warsaw Mime Centre Studio, where they are working on their technique. The actors occasionally perform in Warsaw theatres and the opera. Mimo Theatre is a part of Warsaw Mime Studio, which promotes the development of this form of art in Poland.

Bartłomiej Ostapczuk – a mime actor and director, specialises in mimography, stage movement, movement consultations and mime actions in theatres and films. Since 2005 he has been the Artistic Director of the International Mime Art Festival in Teatr Dramatyczny in Warsaw. Ostapczuk created Warsaw Mime Centre and Mimo Theatre, and co-created the European Mime Federation (PL/CZ/D).
Ostapczuk has created and co-created numerous mime and movement theatre projects. He also conducted many theatre workshops (including those for the Mazovia Culture Institute) and trained drama school students in the Czech Republic, South Korea and the USA. At the Silent Movies

a spectacle that re-creates the atmosphere of films from the beginning of the 20th century – devoid of sound, yet powerfully influencing the spectator with suggestive images and expressive acting, the performance tells the story of people with their joys, desires and yearning, weaknesses, doubts and despair.

Slapstick comedy, humour without words, poetry of the body, contemporary music and timeless stories based on real life events work together in this spectacle to create the magic of the theatre.

From company materials:

The theatre can be a beautiful journey to the places and times that live in our imagination and from time to time try to break free. This time we are moving to the era of silent movies. Films by such great artists as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton or Georges Méliès proved to be a mighty inspiration for the theatre spectacle. However, more important are the emotions expressed through this characteristic art form, the poetry of thoughts and actions. /…/ It turns out that going back to the world of our dreams is possible.
